If you are looking for a sweet treat and you're not in the mood for a donut, I have good news for you 904 Churros will be opening this month and I had the pleasure of meeting Yasier De La Pina and Silvia Posso to discuss their plans to bring authentic churros to the locals.

What inspired you to open up a churro shop?

We own the Cuban Bakery & Cafe downtown and we find that most of our customers are tourists. We really wanted to do something for the locals and we wanted it to be something different, so we decided to do authentic handcrafted churros. The churro originated in Spain, but I grew up eating them in Cuba and I love them!

The churros we will be making are very different than the typical churro with cinnamon and sugar. Our churros will be shaped in a loop, different toppings can be added, such as strawberry sauce and chocolate chips. We are also offering churros with dulce de leche, Nutella, and chocolate filling.

We serve the churros warm and fresh out of the fryer so they are crispy and delicious. The traditional way to eat a churro is with creamy hot chocolate for dipping, so we will have that on the menu as well. We will also be carrying Blue Bell ice cream if you prefer ala mode.

What brought you to St. Augustine?

We both came separately to the United States about twelve years ago. Silvia is from Colombia and I am from Cuba. We met while living in Miami and after getting married we came to St. Augustine for our honeymoon. We loved it so much that three months after being back in Miami we decided to move here and start the Cuban Bakery & Cafe; that was eight years ago.

How has the city changed since you moved here?

We have seen the city grow a lot in the past couple of years. When we arrived here eight years ago it was a very quiet city. There was never traffic and parking was never an issue. The city is definitely changing and I think it’s good, but the parking is a problem and we think that is the reason that locals don't come downtown.

Do you think you’ll keep the business downtown?

Yes, we will. We are currently at the bakery downtown 90% of the time, so we will have to divide and conquer once 904 Churros is open.

What made you decide on this location at 164 SR 312 in the Hobby Lobby Plaza?

We live just south of here and think the corner of 312 and US 1 is a busy and good location. It's a great location for locals living in the surrounding neighborhoods to come out and get a delicious treat without having to go downtown.

How do you feel now that you have jumped all the hurdles and are getting ready to open?

We have been wanting to do this for years and we are finally doing it. It’s a dream come true, we’ve come a long way and we are super excited!

When is the Grand Opening?

We are trying to open for March 16th. We just have a few small things to take care of.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We hope the locals enjoy the churros because we are doing this for them. We want 904 Churros to be a place for people to gather, enjoy each others company and get creative customizing their very own churro.
